The Anthem Film Festival last night screened part three of the Atlas Shrugged movie series
, subtitled “Who is John Galt?” The film festival is part of Freedomfest 2014, going on this week in Las Vegas. The conference theme is “Is Big Brother here?”
Present for the preview was Kristopher Polaha, the actor who portrayed John Galt in the movie, as well as producer Harmon Kaslow, executive producer John Aglialoro, and advisor David Kelley from the Atlas Foundation. John Stossel moderated a Q&A session following the showing.
The movie picks up where the second left off, with Dagny Taggart’s plane crashing. The viewer sees Dagny lying on the ground—played by a third actress. The changing of actors and actresses over the three movies was a bit jarring in the second movie; one almost expects it in the in the third installment. The producers mitigated the impact by typing the name and position of each character across the screen as they first appeared in the story.
Aglialoro, when asked why the actors changed, simply responded that after making the first movie they didn’t know whether there would be a second one. Likewise, after the second they didn’t know if there would be a third.
That made it ultimately impossible to assemble the same cast for all three movies, unlike The Lord of the Rings series, which was shot all at the same time. Aglialoro personally funded the first movie, he said, and about half of the second. He has mostly funded this third one. While the series has just about broken even, Aglialoro says that he has hopes of making a TV series which would allow the story to be told more fully and would be likely to generate more revenue.
The audience liked the new movie and the actor who played John Galt. After the showing there was a long line to have movie posters signed. The movie is about 100 minutes long and moved very quickly.
The movie is scheduled to be released—purposefully—on September 12, 2014. It was a real treat to be able to get such an advance screening.
